FRISCO MURAL by Norman Rosten
"Golden Gate is silent.
The Ocean is calm and heavy.
The open pier-sheds give the wind a speedway,
bridges over the bay are suspended between stars:
morning comes with mist, covering the city
as gulls safely turn above the water: turning.
The seamen are still there when the dawn comes,
tall in the shadow of mist over the piers;
their flag is not very clean but they carry it high,
watching the gulls turning, turning...
A stevedore says
"We could paint slogans on that bird's wings,
across the top, ONE BIG UNION FOR ALL COASTS
and teach her to fly upside down around the world!"
Across the wide oval, 450 men holding,
deep into morning traffic laughed a voice
into the wind, flooding like light the cold..."
